Created in 1979 by Diann Wall-Wilson and approved by the Department of the Navy, Headquarters United States Marine Corps, as well as receiving the copyright approval from the Library of Congress in 1983, the USMC Bulldog was adopted as the Marine Corps Official Mascot. This title was granted by Sgt. Major Leland Crawford. The USMC Bulldog became a licensed property.

Incorporated on over 1000 products and sold on Military bases, as well as in the mass marketplace, the United States Marine Corps Bulldog is one of the most recognizable military logos on the market today. About "Chesty" Puller, the man, the Marine

Lieutenant General Lewis Burwell "Chesty" Puller (June 26, 1898 – October 11, 1971) was a United States Marine officer, notable as the most decorated Marine in history. He was one of only two people to be awarded five Navy Crosses (the other being Roy Milton Davenport). His other decorations included the Distinguished Service Cross, the Silver Star, two Legions of Merit (with Valor device), Bronze Star (with Valor Device), Air Medal, Purple Heart, and awards given by non-U.S. governments. The frigate Lewis B. Puller (FFG-23) was named after him, as well as the name of the bulldog in the official USMC logo.

A common incantation in the tradition of the Marine Corps is to end one's day with the declaration, "Good night Chesty, wherever you are!" Also, to this day in boot camp and OCS (at Quantico, VA), Marines still chant "It was good enough for Chesty Puller/It is good enough for me" Chesty represents the esprit de corps of the Corps, what the United States Marines are really about.
